1. WORD FROM THE COACHES

CAIRNS IRONMAN & 70.3

After what seemed like the longest builds our athletes finally got to race day up in Cairns. The weather was less than ideal with some good chop picking up in the swim then wind and rain on the bike before the humidity picked up on the run. A rolling swim start new for some made selecting the start time important to get the best from leg one before riding on the rolling coast road and loops on the run around Cairns sea front. Our 5 Ironman athletes all had their own challenges with updates being posted online as the race progressed.

Brett Gary Jane Jimmy MichelleResults:

Brett Archbold – 10:17 – 31st. A solid swim and great bike with unfortunately the run not going to plan.

Michelle Bond – 11:14 – 7th. In achieving her IM goals Michelle again improved her ranking at Cairns. The bonus of Kona qualification was just up the road but on this trajectory we believe that it will be achieved in time.

Jane Kahler – 13:11 – 23rd. On her birthday Jane with her constant smile stuck to the plan and ticked off the k’s to a well deserved finish. Her consistency in training showing what can be done.

Gary Rosengarten – 12:05 – 27th. After recently overcoming sickness a tough bike leg took it’s toll but Gary dug deep for another good Ironman finish.

Jimmy Tyler – 12:26 – 119th. Charismatic Jimmy’s race did not go quite according to plan – with a flat on the bike and cramps on the run it was a very hard one. But be sure – he’ll be back at it before long working towards the next one.

70_3 IanFor the  70.3 race again results were mixed. Dan Weekes finished 6th and qualifying for the 70.3 champs in Mooloolaba later this year. Ryan, Ian and Andrew all had good races in the conditions with all posting just over 5hr times. Michelle who had been fighting sickness up to race day unfortunately pulled off the course after the swim but will be back on the Ironman circuit before the year is out.

Congratulations to all our athletes and many thanks for to all for keeping us posted throughout the day with many texts and social media posts on progress, placings and conditions.

LORNE CAMP

Whilst Cairns was tropical our Lorne camp was not! Our athletes and coaches had an amazing weekend with some varying rides and conditions across swim bike and run. The hook up with Endurance Team for this camp was great and we are now looking forward to the next camp. for a camp wrap see below.

COACH AMC

AMC AMC2 AMC3It is with great sadness that this weekend we will say see you later to Coach Annemarie Cooke who has been in and around the squad for the past few years as she returns to Ireland. Her build through the distances to complete IM Port Mac this year was a highlight in addition to her coaching and progressing many of our female athletes and beginners over the past few years. She will be missed but we think she’ll be back for a visit at least. Thanks AMC, you rock 🙂

2. LORNE TRAINING CAMP 2016

LorneWhy should you do a camp with us – read below!? The feedback from this camp has been amazing and we can only thank all involved from athletes, coaches, sponsors and the guys at the Lorne Life Saving Club for making it all possible.

The 4 day camp started with a ride and run Friday to get a feel for what was to come over the weekend. Saturday morning we were greeted with rain and cold winds making riding very challenging but everyone got out there and made the most of it overcoming nerves and fears to conquer and return triumphant albeit maybe a little chilled. With Yoga sessions from Nicole, followed by Nutritional seminar from Ola and a clinical Pilates session from Justin (both from Lakeside Sports Medicine) there was little break before a wear test and Mizuno preso on their new range of runners. some soacking in the sea too to aid recovery mixed this up!

Lorne1Sunday saw much better conditions with many athletes heading up the Benwerin Climb at the end of their ride and then followed this up with an open water swim before another run into the trails.

Monday’s handicapped time-trial was changed to a hill climb due to some road works on the Great Ocean Road with every one of the group getting to the top and getting some well earned pics taken. More swim skills and a massage and stretching session wrapped up and amazing few days.

“Thanks to everyone for an amazing weekend! There were smiles all round whether it be after a spill on the bike, being waist deep in freezing cold water, running or riding in the wind and rain, or grinding up yet another hill. The collective positive energy made it the weekend it was. Thanks especially to all the coaches for your belief in each and every one of us, for your enthusiasm and support, and for being able to push us all that little bit extra! Looking forward to the season ahead!”

lorne2“Truly memorable weekend on many levels. Honest sportsmanship + Camaraderie + Leadership in one inspiring crew. All of you. Thank you.”

“What an awesome weekend! Thank you all for the inspiration, the dedication and camaraderie. You should all be so proud of yourselves for the commitment you have to being fit, healthy and a wonderful example to many others. I thoroughly enjoyed myself being back on the bike, those sunsets and that pain when you push the limits. Thanks also to all of you for your support and encouragement… – we appreciate it greatly. See you at the next camp!”

“Thanks to all our fabulous coaches for a weekend to remember! Achieved things I never thought possible! Also thanks to everyone who passed me this morning giving words of encouragement! 4.TRAINING SESSION UPDATES

calendar

Please ensure you check the calendar regularly to know where and when sessions are as they do sometimes change (this is especially true for swim sessions at MSAC as these can change and are often unfortunately beyond our control). This weeks highlighted sessions: (please ensure you check your program or consult a coach so you attend the appropriate session and that you know your distances – remember you are accountable too!). When out riding please do so safely and pay attention to all the road rules and others using the road.  Read on for a guide to cycling etiquette and bike road safety and ethics.

  • Wednesday and Friday morning Swims now 6am – 7am at MSAC
  • Saturday 18th June – Hill Rides
    • Intermediate and Advanced Groups will be heading to the hills from Elwood along North Road for a 80-90k ride. Groups rolling @630am.
    • Beginners or Intermediates who have not riden the hills before there will be a ride rolling from Wantirna Mall car park at 730am on the Mountain Highway riding the 1 in 20 and Skyhigh. 40-60k options.
  • Sunday 19th June – MSAC Run @9am – NON COACHED, Fairfield Run @8am

When riding on a Tri-Alliance coached road ride it is a requirement to wear team colours. This helps keep and identify the group together and provides more safety in the fact that other riders from outside the group are less likely to join in the group – we do not know them or their riding abilities.
